Winter Term Learning and Activities at Lutley Kindergarten

by lutleykindergarten.co.uk

Winter was a busy and exciting term at Lutley Kindergarten in Halesowen, filled with seasonal learning, important safety messages, and lots of fun through play. ❄️
Throughout the term, our children took part in a range of carefully planned activities focused on keeping warm, staying safe, and developing key early years skills in a supportive and nurturing environment.

Here’s a look back at what we got up to during the winter term.

❄️ Winter Learning and Staying Safe

During the winter term, many of our activities focused on winter themes, safety awareness, and personal wellbeing.
We explored what happens during colder weather and talked about how to keep ourselves warm and safe.

The children learned about:

  • Health and safety linked to bonfires and fireworks
  • What to wear in cold weather and why
  • How stories can help us understand important safety messages

We also marked several national events, helping children learn about the wider world in an age-appropriate way.

🎵 Rhyme Week and National Events

We enjoyed taking part in Rhyme Week, which began on 10th November. The children loved singing familiar rhymes, learning new ones, and developing their listening and language skills through repetition and rhythm.

We also marked Children in Need Day on Friday 14th November, giving children the chance to learn about kindness, helping others, and supporting important causes.

🚒 Fire Safety and Bonfire Learning

(Weeks beginning 3rd and 10th November)

During these weeks, we transformed our home corner into a fire station, which proved very popular with the children.

Activities included:

  • Watching a child-friendly DVD that taught children how to STOP, DROP and ROLL
  • Learning about fire dangers and how to stay safe
  • Dressing up as firefighters through role play
  • Creating bonfire-themed crafts

These activities ran alongside our continuous play provision and helped children understand safety in a calm, reassuring, and engaging way.

📚 Storytelling and Rhyming Fun

(Weeks beginning 17th and 24th November)

Later in the term, we focused on storytelling, rhyming, and early literacy skills.
The children enjoyed exploring The Gruffalo and The Gruffalo’s Child, which supported repetition, rhyming words, and story recall.

We used:

  • Different media to help children remember and retell stories
  • Puppets to act out rhymes and story scenes
  • Group discussions to build confidence and communication

It was lovely to see children joining in, using new words, and expressing themselves through imaginative play.

🔐 Keeping Everyone Safe

Safety continued to be a priority throughout the term.
Families were reminded that the gates at the bottom of the school drive were kept closed for everyone’s safety, with staff opening them at session times.

Thank you to all parents and carers for helping us maintain a safe environment for our children.

🏫 Important Information Shared with Families

During the term, we also shared important updates with parents, including:

Staff were always available to support families with any questions.

💛 Supporting Our Community

As always, we were proud to continue supporting our families and local community.
Lutley Kindergarten is a registered charity and non-profit organisation, and we do our very best to support everyone who attends our setting.
